Freezer problems we repair
If your freezer is doing any of these, keep the door closed and request a visit.
- Not freezing
Food thawing with the power on. Usual causes: a failed start relay, a stuck defrost cycle, a dead evaporator fan or a sealed-system leak.
- Frost buildup
Thick frost on the back wall or coils points to a failed defrost heater, thermostat or control, or a leaky gasket.
- Running constantly
Never cycles off. Dirty condenser coils, a weak door seal, a failing fan or low refrigerant are the usual reasons.
- Warm spots and uneven freezing
One shelf rock solid, another soft. Usually airflow: a blocked vent, a stopped evaporator fan or a frost-choked coil.
- Temperature swings
Drifts between fine and too warm. We check the thermostat or control board, the defrost cycle and, in garages, the surrounding air.
- Will not turn on
No hum, no light, no cold. Could be a tripped GFCI outlet or breaker, a control board or the compressor. We confirm power first, so check the outlet before you book.
- Clicking, buzzing or rattling
Repeated clicking often means the compressor cannot start. Buzzing or rattling usually means a fan hitting frost or a loose part.
- Water or a sheet of ice inside
Ice across the bottom or water on the floor usually means a blocked defrost drain or a bad gasket.
- Freezer side of a refrigerator
Both compartments share one cooling system, so a freezer problem in a refrigerator-freezer usually affects both sides. See our refrigerator repair page for those units.
Chest, upright and garage freezers
Chest freezers hide problems under the lid. When one stops freezing we check the compressor, start relay, thermostat and condenser tubing in the cabinet walls. Most are manual defrost, so some frost is normal. Frost that returns within days of a defrost is not.
Upright freezers work more like a refrigerator, with an evaporator fan, a defrost heater and a drain. Most upright failures are in that defrost system or in airflow.
Garage freezers in Virginia face summer heat and winter cold. Many are not rated for that range, so they run nonstop in July and can shut down in January. We will tell you whether it needs a repair, a garage-ready kit or a better spot.
We also service commercial reach-in and chest freezers for small businesses, and we do sealed-system work: leak diagnosis, compressor replacement and refrigerant recharge. If a repair does not make sense against replacement cost, we will say so.

- Diagnosis first
We find the actual cause and explain it plainly with the cost to fix it. Nothing gets replaced until you say yes.
- Repair and check
We make the repair and verify the freezer is pulling down to temperature before we leave.

Is it worth repairing an older chest freezer?
Often, yes. Many chest freezer failures are a relay, thermostat or gasket rather than the compressor, and you get the cost before any work.
Why does my freezer run all the time in summer?
Heat around the freezer, dirty condenser coils, a worn gasket or low refrigerant all make it run longer. In a garage, the surrounding air is often the whole problem.
What should I do with the food while I wait?
Keep the door closed. A full freezer that stays shut holds a safe temperature for about two days, a half-full one for about a day. Do not refreeze anything that has fully thawed and warmed.
Do you repair commercial freezers?
